How to Keep Indigenous Families Thriving in Mexico AND Support Ancient Textile Traditions.

Innovation through collaboration: Meet DAVA Artisan Design

DAVA Artisan Design supports 20 Zapotec women and their families in their Oaxacan homeland, plus more than 150 local textile artisans supplying them in Oaxaca. DAVA’s collaboration with The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A & M University, and MIT means that DAVA Artisans will continue to grow their business, which directly protects and supports indigenous women and their textile traditions. With your support of DAVA Artisan Design, these women will be able to remain stably-employed in a life-giving, life-sustaining artisanal endeavor, and stay with their families in their homeland, instead of seeking work away from their families and their Oaxacan roots.

To do so, DAVA Artisan Design must provide simple dorm housing for partnering university intern students, visiting experts and trainers, funders, and artisan partners who make the trek to the remote location in Oaxaca, with no hostels or hotels nearby. Without this new dorm space, the closest accommodations for overnight guests are 30 miles away through the mountains due to a lack of local resources.

Can You Help?

DAVA has already raised half of the $30,000 needed to build sleeping spaces and bathrooms for students, visiting artisans, and other partners. The next step is raising the remaining $15,000 to finish constructing and furnishing these dorms by November 2023. To expand and enhance the DAVA Artisans complex and help DAVA to continue a sustainable lifeline for the indigenous women and their families in Oaxaca, your funds will build and furnish:

  • Six second-story dorm rooms with beds, dressers, and linens

  • Plumbing and the finish-out of three bathrooms with toilets, basins and showers

  • A staircase connecting dorm accommodations to the first floor

  • A new roof for the second-floor expansion
